The 6 principles for growing a business on social media

The short version

Everyone overcomplicates how to grow a business with social. These are the 6 principles I used to grow my company’s social to 8M followers and 30M monthly video views before we sold it, plus how to act on each one: attract attention, provide value, build a list you own, turn it into customers, showcase what you’re best at, and build community.

These principles haven’t changed, but the tools have, and that’s the exciting part!

1. Attract attention

Create and post content that gets people’s attention. Mostly new people, but also your followers.

How to act on it: Before you post anything, answer three questions. What is your product? What problem does it solve? Who does it solve that problem for? That’s who you’re trying to reach, and every piece of content should ladder back to them.

2. Provide value

Solve a problem, entertain (make someone laugh or cry or feel seen or feel related to) or inspire (a product, a place or an activity).

How to act on it: Ask yourself whether someone walks away from this post feeling like they got value even if they never buy from you. If the answer is no, keep going until it’s yes.

3. Turn your viewers and followers into a list you own

If you’ve provided value on social, people will want more value from you and will be willing to give their email in exchange.

How to act on it: Someone seeing your post, or even liking or commenting on it, doesn’t mean they’ll remember you or come back, so give them a reason to join your list. That’s how a lot of people end up on mine: they comment a keyword on one of my posts, an automation sends them a DM, and they give me their email.

4. Turn that list into customers

Send emails that provide even more value and make it easy for people to understand how to buy from your business and how that will benefit them.

How to act on it: If your social isn’t actually driving your business, it’s a distraction. Every email should give them something useful and make the next step to buying from you obvious.

5. Showcase what you’re best at

Word-of-mouth marketing only works if the person who hears about your business likes what they see when they check out your socials. Most of your content is to attract an audience and provide value to them. Some of your content needs to act like a portfolio, and it has a different job.

How to act on it: Pull up your profile and look at it like someone a friend just recommended you to. Does it show what you’re best at? That’s your portfolio.

6. Build community

Reply, answer DMs, and show your customers, so people come back and bring friends. Make people feel respected and appreciated, even if they never buy from you.
